Left-Right? A new year resolution
12.31.04 (12:47 pm)   [edit]

A new year’s resolution?

Well I will try to be more understanding of the poor lost lefties and far right wackos.  As I read many of their blogs some are truly decent people.  A little confused and of course I’ll do my best to educate them.  But I will do my best to refrain from just calling them names or being overly sarcastic.  On those rare occasions their arguments sway me I will adjust my views to reflect the new revelations.  That doesn’t mean that at time there won’t be a smack-down here and there for the very poorly thought-out post some will surely make.  As I’m sure some will do with me.  Hey fair is fair…

Democracy is un-Islamic
12.31.04 (6:40 am)   [edit]

In Iraq, combined statements by insurgent forces say that democracy in un-Islamic.  The right of individuals to determine their own fate is apparently not in line with their religion.  But what this shows more than anything is the desire by insurgent and other religious leaders (dictators, tyrants and terrorist) that they know better than the average person what the public needs.  We have seen throughout history where all forms of government that take this approach turn into complete tyrannies.  Even if you somehow get a leader that is looking out for the good of the people he won’t last and the resulting infighting will produce a system of corruption that can’t be fought against.

The claim is that democracy would lead to passing un-Islamic laws.  It matters not what the people want but rather what the religious leaders (warlords for lack of a better word) decide is best for the society.  They claim they are simply following the will of God.

What I find interesting is the far left in this country (US) often support these people yet find the religious right here so abhorring.  The biggest difference is that here the religious right must go through the democratic system to change anything they want and that is huge.  Jerry Falwell, and others that are zealots in my book still don’t resort to advocating violence to push their agenda.  I will say though the two religious factions have one true thing in common, they are really after power not righteousness.

Vodka with a twist
12.29.04 (4:43 pm)   [edit]

Skyy Vodka is my latest venture into Martini land.  The straight vodka is pretty good but a couple nights ago I tried the Citrus vodka.  Now I've shied away from flavored vodka up to this point.  It seems so, fashionable and I hate fashionable.  But I have to admit the citrus lightened the drink perfectly but use a lime or lemon twist instead of an olive.  The Vodka Martini is now a drink for more than just the hardcore drinkers. It has an added benefit of being reasonable priced also.

Dumb people
12.28.04 (8:30 am)   [edit]

Ok you gotta read this.  It just proves what we all know.  There are some dumb people out there.  Hate Crime

Taking the Press on.
12.25.04 (6:38 pm)   [edit]

Interestingly enough I find that the press specifically the Associated Press is being taken to task on their reporting.  Wretchard at the Belmont Club, Powerline and Roger L. Simon are questioning the actions of the AP’s recent reports in Iraq.  What they are talking about is exactly what I was writing about a couple of weeks ago.  The press is not just about news reporting as much as news making.  Check the above sites out for their very good analysis of the AP’s actions and explanations.  And just as important check out the AP’s excuse here at Poynter online with a statement by AP’s media relations guy.

My commentary on this subject although not this particular event is here.

Raiders what's up?
12.25.04 (12:13 pm)   [edit]

UpDate:  Well this was a good game to watch but damn I'm getting tired of the Raiders losing.  Ahaaa.....lol

Ok, it' only minutes into the Raider KC game and it's apparent why neither team will be in the playoffs this year.  Raiders are leading at the moment but both teams have no defense.

Will be updatings as I can.

Ok I will say the Raiders have intercepted a pass and blocked a field goal attempt.

Ok KC just scored so it's 7 -7 in the first quarter.  It does look like it will be a fun game to watch though.

14 - 7 Raiders.. whoo hoo sort of..lol

14-14 2nd Qtr. 6:44 left

24-21 Raiders 3rd QTR.  Yeah it's a fun game.

27-28 KC 1:15 left , Raiders ball close to fieldgoal range.

46 yard Raiders FG kick to take lead with 1:07 left.

KC returns the kick to the 35 yard line.  Way to close. lol

KC kicks a 38 yard FG to take the lead with :22 seconds left.  Well hell.

KC wins 31 - 30

Whatever your faith may be I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Chaplain in Mosul
12.22.04 (3:37 am)   [edit]

A Chaplains account of the Mosul Attack.

Might want to grab a tissue before reading.

Kirstie and Jenny Craig
12.21.04 (11:13 am)   [edit]

You know I really don’t care much about Hollywood and the over indulgent actors and actresses but hearing the Kirstie Alley has signed with Jenny Craig I really hope she does well.  I don’t know what it is about her I like.  I mean she kind of comes across as a bitch but somehow that doesn’t seem right either.

I’m not sure why she hasn’t just hired a private trainer and dietitian.   I think some people try to convince themselves the weight doesn’t matter but in fact it matters a lot.  While it's not nearly as important to others I think it does have an effect on your self confidence.  Hell I have trouble with weight and one would think my job would make it easy to stay in shape and thin.  But stress works differently on us all.

Yahoo, Marine and family
12.21.04 (8:01 am)   [edit]

CNN report

The family of Marine Lance Cpl. Justin M. Ellsworth is trying to get the email of their son from Yahoo. Justin died while serving in Iraq.  While I sympathize with the family I think Yahoo is right on this issue.  The family has no inherent right to Justin’s email account.   I wonder why they would want his complete email account anyway.  Correspondence between Justin and others that are not family would seem to be a privacy issue that Yahoo should not release.  Without written consent how would you know what Justin would want?

Poem to a Father
12.19.04 (3:03 pm)   [edit]

Here is a poem my niece wrote for her father in Iraq.

It's hard to let you go

to do the things you do

The army's taken you away

but it's not just you

they've taken all our men

Our ships and our glory

our only defending team

a neverending story

You are the soldier

that many cannot be

you do your duty right

you keep the battle clean

I love you and I'm proud

to say that your my dad

I hate that your gone

It makes me really sad.

Rumsfeld under fire
12.19.04 (12:02 pm)   [edit]

Donald Rumsfeld is under assault.  From the left who hate anyone on the right with the balls to speak out and from the right who hate anyone on the right with the balls to speak out.  It’s amazing that the Republican Party has taken the Senate and the House with the back stabbing and petty jealousies that are apparent throughout the GOP.  Hell, it’s no wonder President Bush is to be named “Person of the Year” by Time magazine; he and most of his cabinet seem to be the only people in Washington with any balls at all.

Rumsfeld takes the heat for Iraq as if there were people who predicted the current situation.  Please don’t tell me about Shenseki’s we need more troops comments.  He was wrong on so many things it’s not worth relating.  I’ll tell you there weren’t many if any that correctly saw the ground truth as it is now.  How many arm chair and real Generals talked of a US blood bath in the opening days of the war?  Many that were on the sidelines and they were wrong.  How many prior to the reconstruction period complained about Armor?  It was pretty damn quite then.

The fact that Iranian, Syrians and others outsiders are helping to fuel this insurgency seems lost on the pundits and weak kneed politicians.  On the Armor issue, hell the Humvees were Jeep replacements not tanks as has been written in other places.  Rumsfeld said during the question and answer period with the set up GI, “you go to war with the Army you have not necessarily the one you want” (paraphrased). Well that’s the truth.  You now why?  It’s because the politicians and the American public have been unwilling for the past 40 years to pay for it.  Nobody wanted to admit there was a growing potential for war. Are you willing to loose some social benefits for a “perfect Army”?  I doubt it.

This is not the administration that cut the force too deeply.  This is not the administration that determined that the National Guard should make up nearly half of the fighting force.  But this administration and Donald Rumsfeld have had to work with the hand they were dealt and in my opinion have done a damn good job.  Are the reigns still to tight on our forces?  Yes, but looser than I’ve ever seen them before.  Yes mistakes are made.  Mistakes will continue to be made.  The fellow that looks you in the eye and tells you what you want to hear is not your friend.  You can bet that fellow is telling everyone what they want to hear.  We don’t need more of those.

The press may want to believe the American Soldier and Marine don’t like Rumsfeld but I have news for them. He is very well liked and appreciated.  We’d rather be told to suck it up and drive on then promised things we can’t possible get during our tours.

Hang in there Mr. Secretary, when all is said and done you won’t have trouble finding a fresh beer at your table.

Update:  The "Rumsfeld Letters" are complete BS.  Bring something better if your going to attack...

Peterson, global warming,Europe
12.14.04 (7:33 pm)   [edit]

It seems I am at a loss right now.  I don’t have much to say about events.  The last two weeks I’ve fought a cold and some frustration.  As I read the news I find little to comment on.  Not that there isn’t lots out there to think about.  But sometimes it feels like the best thing to do is just let things evolve a little more.  So I’ll give you just the tidbits and random thoughts of tonight.

I’ve noticed the extremes on both the left and the right continues their rhetoric.  The left refusing to concede that maybe their extremes aren’t attracting people and the religious right seems to think they are the ones with a mandate.  I think both are wrong.

Scott Peterson receives the death penalty and I’m really not interested.  Why is this trial any different than hundreds going on everyday?  I’ll tell you it’s because the media has decided to make it an event.  By itself it’s just a murder case and while important to the families of those involved it’s not particularly spectacular.  There is so much more interesting and relevant news out there that doesn’t get reported or certainly not the attention it should.  I suspect though the future of Blogs and other media will change the direction of Major media whether they like it or not.

In Europe the Associated press reports that in Germany and France more than half have an unfavorable feeling towards Americans.  How real is this?  I don’t really know.  I was in Germany about eight months ago and didn’t find any outward hostility.  I took the train from Würzburg to Regan and enjoyed it quite a bit.  But then I like to travel.  Do they have a very elitist attitude?  Yeah some do.  But how could they not with over 50 years of United States protection to spend on social experiments.  This is a time when unemployment rates are nearly double that of the United States.  The unemployed do like to blame someone for their ills.  But I really don’t worry when the chips are down and they find themselves overwhelmed by events they’ll once again love us.  Provided we come to the rescue again.

Ok I have a question.  What book should I buy?  I went to Barns and Noble the other day and after two hours I could pick a book to buy.  Now the one I wanted was Shadow War by Richard Miniter, but damn that book was $27 and as most of you that read this blog I’m a cheap bastard.  I did see it on Amazon for $17.  So what political, social, historical book tops your list and what book of fiction (preferably action type) do you recommend?

Speaking of books, Michael Crichton has written a book that suggests the global warming issue is a scam.  No, really.  I know it’s hard to believe.  LOL.  The book State of fear is out and getting quite a bit of attention.  I watched and interview with Michael the other night and found something that was said pretty interesting.  It seems instead of going to leading scientist in the field he analyzed the facts of global warming himself.  You mean mere mortals can analyze facts?  I bet the Eco-Scientific community is having a fit over this.  Well I think global warming like many other issue of the day is a front for organizations to scare people into donating money which in turn pays very lucrative salaries.  But then that’s what most Churches do too……

Male PMS?
12.09.04 (7:09 am)   [edit]

You know some weeks just aren’t fun.  For some reason there are times when everyone pisses you off.  Things that you normally just blow off set you on fire.  That’s the kind of week I’m having.  That would be ok but during weeks like this I find I overreact and end up apologizing to loads of people later.  That is bad because I hate to apologize.  So you’ll notice I haven’t been writing a lot.   Honestly I’m afraid I’ll just rant and regret what I’d say right now.    Maybe it’s the season and the fact I’m doing desk work at the moment.

To all those of you who I normally visit and comment to, I’m still reading, just not saying much.

Oh yeah and I’m sending some love goes out to all of you who want it.  See I’m fair about it.  Of course someone will complain that this is like a form letter and I don’t mean it.

The other enemy
12.06.04 (12:16 pm)   [edit]

Has the press become the enemy?  It is unfortunate that while we have so many individuals fighting in far way places the press as a general rule has seen fit to treat them and the US in general as foes.  The coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan is atrocious.  The facts reported on are extremely subjective.  A Marine that kills an un-armed insurgent is compared to Nazi prison guards.  At the same time murdering terrorist are treated with kid gloves as if it’s not really their fault their so disturbed.  Remember our military is targeting insurgents while the insurgents target primarily innocent civilians and local law enforcement.

The US press has decided that they are reporters of “news” first and citizens last.  The problem is that like most things individual events are not necessarily representative of the whole campaign.  They use terms like “War Crimes” and “Atrocities” without context purely for sensationalism.  How often have you seen a news report of a US victory?  It doesn’t matter if we completely route the enemy the press will tell us how futile the effort was.  How we have not really hurt the other side.  How the enemy has changed tactics and confused the US strategist, all the while being completely wrong.  The individual reporter has decided they know better what is happening than anyone else.

While I don’t think reporters need to be “towing the party line” I think honest reporting would be nice.  When you see the enemy mutilating bodies you don’t just ignore that because they do it all the time then jump like hyenas on a soldier or Marine making a judgment call to save the lives of their squad.  They parse their words to claim fairness yet the story will have an obvious slant.  Do you think if atrocities were listed side by side that the US list would honestly amount to more than the insurgents?  I would say the lopsidedness would enormously favor the insurgents.

It’s as if there is a concerted effort on the part of the media and the left (yes I know they are basically the same) to lose this war.  Not just to oppose the start of the war but to actually help the enemy win.  Do they understand what they are doing?  If they do than their actions are treasonous. They are willing to sacrifice the lives of our military while claiming they support the troops.  If they are successful and the US and Iraqi citizens lose what do you suppose the future will look like?  Not just the future on far away shores but the future right here?

Who's the coolest?
12.04.04 (3:06 pm)   [edit]

Who is the coolest Disney character?  I say Ballou the bear. His rendition of “Bare Necessities” is just swinging man….

Yeah sick time with the kid....lol

Down but not out
12.04.04 (3:01 pm)   [edit]

I haven't been around much lately.  I've had a cold the last few days.  But don't lose heart I'll return soon.

Lots of stuff to comment on but with my head in this vice it's tough to think clearly.  Yes I know some of you never believed I thought clearly anyway.....
